Stormbird is sometimes credited (says the New Zealand Times) with being the oldest steamer in active service. While that distinction is due to her so far as Australasia is concerned, there are other steamers in active service considerably older than tho Stormbifd. One of tho most notable is tho iron screw steamer Transit (formerly John Bowes), which was built in 1852 by .Palmer Bros, and Co., at Newcastle. She is a vessel of 459 tons gross, and according to latest advices is trading between, tho Baltic and the Tyne and other ' ports. Tho Stormbird was launched in May, 185-1, and is therefore two years younger than tho Trahsit. Tho Stormbird was built by Laurie and Co., Whiteinch, Glasgow. BANFFSHIRE SOLD. Foreign buyers, it is understood, have purchased the Banffshire, owned by Messrs. Turnbull, Martin and Co., of London. The steamer ran under tho auspices of tho F. and S. Line, and was built at NewcasUe-on-Tync in 1894. Until recently sbo was principally employed between London or Liverpool and Australian ports, often extending to New Zealand, returning Homeward via Capo Horn, but in late years she has boon sent where business warranted. The Banffshire is a vessel of 5736 tons gross and 3719 tons net register, and was disposed of for .€34,0C)0. It is also understood that one or two more vessels of tho F. and S. licet are under oiler to foreign buyers. Wellington advises that tho Wimmora, Victoria, Maitai, Warrimoo, Mooraki, Aina, Tonic, H.M.S. Pyramus and Kangatira should ho within wireless range to-night. Auckland "advises' that tho Victoria, Witnmora, Warrimoo, Mooraki, Atua, Maitai, Fiona, Makura and Navua should be within wireless range tonight. '
