Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Lightband returned from Wellington this morning. MrV J. P. Firth, headmaster of Wei-, liugton College, and Mrs. Firth, returned to Wellington on Wednesday from an extended visit to England and Europe.
Captain Kempson, who has been for many years master of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.’s Athonio, is about to retire from the sea. The present is bis last voyage to New Zealand as conn niiuidor.
Mr. B. O’Dowda, who has been spending a short holiday in New Plymouth, loaves again to-morrow ■ morning. for the AA'eher district,. where he will resume oil-boring operation? on behalf of the Shell Company. A Hawera telegram reports the death of Mr. AY. H. Ycrokor Bindon, headmaster of Manaia School, aged 60. He was the first inspector under the AVanganui Education Board, but failing health compelled him to relinquish his position as inspector some years ago, and took up the lighter duties of teaching. '
The death is announced to-day of Mr. Archibald Hood, who for very many years was a, well-known figure in Devon Street, having been a resident hero from the war times. For some time past advancing years, (he was 87. years of age) have confined him to his home in Dawson Street. Years ago lie was a prolific maker of verse and some twenty years back he published a little volume relating to the inter-tribal lighting among tho Maoris at Moturoa.
