EXPLOSION AT ADDINGTON. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 18. An inquiry is being demanded concerning an explosion at the Addington railway workshops Mn Saturday. A. worn-out steam hammer was being broken up into sizes convenient for smelting, and a charge of gelignite was used. Apparently the charge was too big, for the explosion hurled chunlss of iron in all directions. STEAMER ASHORE. NAPIER, Dec. 19. The steamer John, 339 tons, owned by Captain Hull, of Wellington, and 'sailing under Captain Helm, ran ashore at the mouth of, the Tnkituki River, 10; miles south of Napier during the, night. She was on her way from Gisborne to Wellington, having left Pov-, erty Bay-at 1.15 p.m. yesterday, with 60 bales of wool. The Tangaroa has, been despatched to fonder assistance. Details, are meagre, but the crew are allsafe' The sea is very calm. Later. The steamer was re-floated at 10 o’clock.
