Mr. A. E. Sykes, who is nothing if not enterprising, has moved into his new freehold' premises opposite Hoffmann’s. The shop has been beautifully fitted and compares more than favourably with any similar premises on this coast. ... At the Central School breaking-up ceremony this afternoon, the Chairman (Mr. F. P. Carkell) announced that thanks to the energy displayed by Mr. Dempsey and the town’s committee, which assisted him in promoting the recent carnival, the School Committee would be enabled to make a thorough job of the asphalting of the Central and Courtenay Street school yards and also effect other improvements, so that when the children came back to school again after their holidays there would be no more’wet feet, of which they had heard so much lately. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne) to-day received a card - ftom the officer commanding the Canadian Cadets (Captain E. N. Davy), dated R M.S. Zealandia at sea, December, •1912, sending kind regards and many thanks to the citizens of New Plymouth for their generous hospitality. The card was printed on board the Zealandia on the cadets’ homeward journey and posted at Honolulu. On it is printed the following message:—“The members of the Canadian Cadet Corps, No. 101, M.D. No. 11 (homeward bound from their glorious to'ur of Australia, and New Zealand), extend, Christtc.hs and New Year greetings to their many friends beneath the Southern Civss.”
A meeting was held on Wednesday evening at which Dr. Leatham and Mr. AV. Ambury, representing the New Plymouth Expansion and Tourist League, conferred with Messrs. AV. A. Collis, H. Stocker and A. Humphries, representing the Mountain House Committee, with reference to asking the livery stable and motor car proprietors for a fixed scale of charges for trips to the Mountain House. This has already been done in the case of one livery stable proprietor at Inglewood, who has supplied in detail a fixed scale of charges for various conveyances. As a part of the scheme that the League lias in hand for advancing New Plymouth, it is most desirable that local stable proprietors should co-operate and assist in this most important work. It is also to be hoped that those interested will make a strong effort to institute a regular trip, say once or twice a week, with return fares that will be well within the reach of all who desire to visit the mountain. After discussion a scheme was drawn up and will be submitted to the local stable and motor car proprietors.
