PETROLEUM.

An important innovation in oil bearing operations is being introduced by the -New Zealand Oilfields, Ltd., to whoso order was landed at Gisborne last week an up-to-date rotary boring Slant, ivhich is tho first of its kind in ew Zealand. Tho plant was manufactured by the Oil Works Supply Company, Ltd., Los Angeles, and has been specially procured for the purpose of penetrating the bed of papa that overlies the true formation of tho East Coast. The difficulty of penetrating this strata by the ordinary tools has, the Poverty Bay Herald says, almost brought local operations to a standstill, and it is confidently believed that the ’new plant will overcome these difficulties. The machinery is being sent out bv rail for erection at the well near Waih'irere, and the result of its operations will be watched with considerable interest.
