A private message states that Colonel F. W. Abbott died of pneumonia on tlie steamer lonic on his way to take charge of the Christchurch district.
Tho wife of Air. E. de C. Clarke, M.A., of Auckland University, died after a short illness of pneumonia last Thursday afternoon. Airs. Clarke hud many friends in New Plymouth, Air. Andrew AlTudoe, ■ youngest son of Air. W. AlTndoe, of New Plymouth, was married a few weeks ago at Hamilton to Aliss Alys Eva Campbell, daughter of Air. E. A. Campbell, of To Aroha. The illness of the Duchess of Connaught is causing anxiety in London. It was feared that it was a case of appendicitis, bub on Tuesday morning a bulletin announced that an operation was unlikely to bo needed. Air. Mansfield, the Wanganui borough engineer, last night tendered his resignation, which tho council accepted, and, as a mark of appreciation of the work he has done, granted him six months* salary. Dr. James flight, professor of political economy at Canterbury College, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on Hie Cost of Living Commission, caused through the retirement of Air. J. Boss, of Dunedin. A Dunedin telegram says:—lt is understood that Hie Hon. J. A. Alillar is suffering from trouble with bis eyesight, and that his"medical adviser has ordered him to take a complete rest for a time. Mr, Alillar loft for the north by the second express yesterday.
