The illness of the Duchess of Connaught is causing anxiety in London. It was feared that it was a case of appendicitis, bub on Tuesday morning a bulletin announced that an operation was unlikely to bo needed. Air. Mansfield, the Wanganui borough engineer, last night tendered his resignation, which tho council accepted, and, as a mark of appreciation of the work he has done, granted him six months* salary. Dr. James flight, professor of political economy at Canterbury College, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on Hie Cost of Living Commission, caused through the retirement of Air. J. Boss, of Dunedin. A Dunedin telegram says:—lt is understood that Hie Hon. J. A. Alillar is suffering from trouble with bis eyesight, and that his"medical adviser has ordered him to take a complete rest for a time. Mr, Alillar loft for the north by the second express yesterday.
