WHANGAMOMONA AND KOHURATAHI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) May !). —The reading room erected last year (for the benefit of the 100 odd workers on the Whangamomona tunnel) has now been removed by the kindness of the Public Works-Depart-ment to the site of Tahora tunnel, where operations aro likely to be for the next three years. May I bring before those concerned the way this useful institution has been treated since its first erection. It was the Kev. Mr. ilonchon, of the Church of England, who worked hard, and, by the assistance of many goat Samaritans, put up a nice large room with an open fireplace, amt provided over isOO good nooks, also papers and magazines. It was well patronised, but, to the discredit of patrons, the books were handled in a rough wanner and many were stolen, while the general appearance was not much bettor than a pigsty. It is generally admitted that the men who are in the neighbourhood at present are not likely to allow such a state of affairs to occur again. In fact, the library in question should have been placed in its present site in the first place. I believe, sir, that in uvelve months’ time wc shall see as good u library as there is on any other line of the same size. Mr. O’Neill, the Knhnratahi butcher, is creeling a new residence alongside Iris butchery. It looks as it Charlie were contemplating matrimony. The same is the case with Mr. W. Header, the Wlianga painter. He is putting up an up-to-date 5-roornod house, and is making no secret of his matrimonial project. Whangamomona will have the down Hall full to the brim on the 24th hist., when the social in aid of the Sunday school organ fund will take place. 'There will bo songs and recitations galore, and a bun rush afterwards. 1 hope they will raise the funds required. They certainly have a good chance of doing so. On Wednesday the bullion arrived, and the paymaster had no difficulty in disposing of over X'oOOi) “Jims.” Mr, U. Campbell’s new hotel was opened on Monday, Gth, without any ceremony, the only fact of interest being that a well-known light of Wlurnga lost his false teeth. The new hotel is far better than the one destroyed by fire. It is a two-storey building, with over kb rooms well furnished in the most comfortable style. The Red Post Furnishing Co. of New Plymouth did the furnishing throughout, and decidedly it reflects credit on the company, for the excellent taste shown in the matching of colours and patterns. 1 trust when the work is completed to bo

able to tell you more about it. Mr. Frank Dell, of Stratford, deserves a Humane Society’s medal if anyone over did. A. Crawford, a 6ft. 3iii. giant became temporarily insane, and was missing from his camp for three days, when Frank, the only searcher for the Stranger, discovered him over seven miles away in the bush. It was not an easy proposition to find

the giant, without a stitch of clothes wandering in the bush. Air. Bell had to display unusual courage and tact to arrest such a stalwart, and then he telephoned to Constable Seanmdl at AA’lianga, who escorted the patient all the way to Now Plymouth-for medical treatment. Crawford is a man of extraordinary strength to endure two nights’ exposure in frosty weather without a stitch of clothes.
