TRACTION ENGINE TURNS TURTLE Per Press Association. HASTINGS, May 10. The Hawke’s Bay Timber Company’s traction engine, drawing two trucks of gravel, this afternoon, under contract with the County Council, broke through a bridge on the Havelock-Mangateretere road, turned turtle, and fell thirty feet into tho creek below. The driver, R. 0. Turpin, aged 40, a married man with five children, resident at Port Ahuriri,' was killed instantly, the top of his head being crushed between tho cab and tho bridge timber. His mate, Laurence Williams, of Bissington, fell into tho water beneath the engine, and remained; there until the steam cleared. He was scalded about the face and leg, but wae not otherwise seriously injured. He was removed to tho Napier Hospital. KILLED BY A MOTOR CAB. AUCKLAND, May 10. Tho inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs. Jeannio Browse, killed by a motor car at Remuera 021 May' 8, was commenced l yesterday, and concluded to-day. A great deal of evidence was taken, and tho jury returned a verdict that death was duo to shock, following on injuries caused by impact with the motor car, and that tho deceased met her death accidentally through an error ’of judgment on the part of the drivfer. The jury added the following.rider; “The jury desire to call the attention of .the Goveimmont to the evidence of John Beveridge Lindsay,-traffic inspector for Auckland, they being distinctly of the! opinion that every person driving a motor-car on the public highways should be tho holder of a certificate of competency.” MOTOR CAB ACCIDENT. CARTERTON, May 11. /-Aoserious accident occurred last night at 11.45 o’clock. Mr. O. A. Cadwallader was returning to Carterton from Mar- ■ tiuborough in his car, when he drove over tho north approach to, the Black * Bridge, a drop of about ten feet. The oar overturned and pinned him underneath. It flung a passenger named A. D. Anncsley clear. Simultaneously the oar burst into flames, which quickly enveloped Cadwallader. Annesloy extricated ' him and succeeded in subduing the flames. Cadwallader was taken to tho Daleton private hospital. He was badly burned all over, his right arm and two legs being tho worst. The burns, though serious, are not considered dangerous. The car is a complete wreck, only the steel frame and the eugino remaining. The car was only lately purchased. '
