THE OPUNAKE RAILWAY.
SCOPE OP THE COMMISSION. (By Telegraph-.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, May 9. Mr. Holmes, engineer-in-chief, has been appointed chairman of the commission that is to inquire into the question of railway communication with Opnnake. The report is to he in by Juno 13. The commission is charged to make inquiry into the following matters: (1) Upon the best means to be adopted to provide adequate means of communication, for the transport of produce and other merchandise in tho area of the country lying _ to the westward of the main line of tho railway from Hnwera to New Plymouth, whether by railway or trams, ‘and having regard to the opening up and development of the said area, the probable traffic, and the necessities of the country through which such railways or trams will pass. (2) Upon the different routes suggasted for the proposed branch line of railway from the Wanga-nui-Now Plymouth railway to Opunakc. (3) If any tramways would ho advisable for the opening up and development of tho area of country hereinbefore referred to, and the best location for same. (4) What will ho the probable cost of the said railways or tramways, and what will probably be the economic and commercial Value and other merits of such railways and tramways respective!}’.
