FIRE AT WAITARA.
BOARDING HOUSE DAMAGED. At 7.30 on Thursday morning the inhabitants of Waitara were startled by ; tho jangling of the fire bell, and it i was soon ascertained that the locale of the fire was at Mrs. Fairley’s boarding house; opposite tho waterfront, The brigade .was promptly on the spot, and soon had leads playing on tho burning building. A high wind was blowing at the time, but the fire • was got under control before much damage had been done. The fire seems to have started in two of tho bed-rooms simultaneously, one a corner room on , the ground floor, and tho other an unoccupied one on the second floor j immediately above it. The actual dam- ! ago done to the burning building itself , was slight, nor was the furniture great- : !v injured by the flames, although tho damage by water was more considerable. It is not known how the fire ■. started. An auction sale of the furniture and effects had been advertised to be held in the afternoon. The house was insured in the Commercial Union for £SOO, and the furniture, in- I elusive of a piano, in tho South British for £250.
