THE TERRITORIALS.
PARADES AND FOOTBALL. Por Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 9. Representatives of tho Rugby Union, Football Association, and the Hockey Association waited on General Godloy to-day in reference to the number of daylight parades called for this month, in particular the parades tallied for June 1 and 3 in Newtown Park. General God ley said there was no other suitable location. The deputation accepted the explanation and withdrew the objection. AA’ith reference to the parades called for this month, the General said these were rendered necessary owing to the fact that the uniforms had not come to hand earlier, also because a certain ■number of parades had to be held before the end of tho volunteer year. It was very unlikely similar circumstances would arise again.
The deputation made it clear that they wore not opposed to military training; on the contrary, lliey supported tho scheme, and recognised that defence had to como first and all forms of sport second. They expressed tho opinion however that it would bo a very good thing if the Territorial system and various forms of sport oonid bo run hand in hand. They suggested that it might be possible to give notice of daylight parades to sports bodies some time before the date fixed and that as many daylight parades as possible should be Held in tho dead season.
General Gcdley said in future all daylight parades would probably be notified a considerable time ahead, hut he pointed out that tho basis of tho system of the Territorial scheme was continuity of training.
