EGMONT RACING CLUB. [WINTER MEETING. FIRST DAY. The winter meeting of the Egmont Racing Club opened at Hawera on Wednesday in splendid weather, fliici there was a big crowd present, the gate takings being £l7 odd better than last year. There wore large fields throughout the day, and the racing was interesting, some of the finishes being very close and exciting. The tote returns for the day amounted to £9jDo against £8531 for the corresponding day last year. Mr. W. H. Hartgill occupied tho judge's box, aud Mr. C. O'Connor negotiated the barrier, and both performed their duties in a .thoroughly satisfactory manner. The arrangements for tlie meeting were admirably carried out by Mr. J. Turton, tlie club’s secretary, and a capable band of stewards. The Hawera Municipal Brass Band was in attendance, and rendered a well-selected programme of music during the afternoon. Details; —

Dog■gerbank was first out, followed by le Whararoa. llioy took the first fence together and led into the straight by a big gap from Surplus, who had made up much of the lost ground. Passing the stand the order was - Doggerbank, Te Whararoa, Surplus, and Seaman, with Coronetted last. Along the back stretch Surplus tired, and Seaman went to the front from Doggerbank, with Silver Cluso fast improving his position, and Cornelian fouith. Three furlongs from home Silver Cluso had headed the field and led into the straight by throe lengths from Seaman, Doggerbank, and Cornelian. Silver Cluso won comfortably by four lengths from Seaman, and Cornelian headed Doggerbank half-way down the straight for third place. Coronetted was fifth and Surplus last. Time, 2miu. 52|scc.

At the distance East Wind, on the rails, headed Katua, but Draft came fast on the outside and won by half a length, and Kiwitahi beat Katua for third place by a nose. Going along the back Plantation moved up, and turning into the straight was a good length clear of Afterthought and Con the Shaughraun. A fine race resulted. At the distance Con the Shaughraun issued a strong challenge to Plantation, who had to he ridden all out to win by a head. Ngatiruanui was two lengths away third, with Afterthought a length

At the distance Strategist issued a strong challenge, but failed to get up to the leader by a neck, and The Native was half a length away, third.
