CHARGE OF MURDER.
AFTER FOUR YEARS. By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. (Received May 9, 1 p.m.) ' LONDON, May 8. The trial of Win. Ward, who was arrested at Perth, West Australia, for the murder of Ernest Nixoy Smith, dairy manager at Chiswick, in 1208, has begun. Ward informed a constable, on the voyage home, that deceased tried to arrest him and was struck by an umbrella in the struggle. Learning that deceased had been strabbed he went to Canada and thence to Australia where he hid in the hush. Marshall, a tailor, gave evidence that ho heard Ward threaten to gouge Smith’s eyes out. Another witness saw Ward follow Smith and strike him with an umbrella. There was no struggle. Ward was remanded.
