MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly .mooting of the Taranaki Comity Council was continued on Monday afternoon, all the members being present except Councillor Tate. CLAIM FOR SURFACE DAMAGE. Mr. J. Spence, Carrington Road, wrote asking for compensation for surface damage done through carting stone through his property. He claimed £7 7s fkl. He had previously written to the council on the same subject, but his appeal had boon treated with contempt. If his request was not granted now ho intended to take proceedings for recovery of tlie same. Councillor Billing will inspect and report. SUGGESTED ELECTRIC TRAMWAY Tlio Premier, in reply to tho council's letter suggesting that the Opunake Railway Commission should also consider tho advisability of constructing an electric tramway or light railway from New Plymouth to Opunako wrote that the matter was before Cabinet some little time ago, hut as it was considered it opened up a very wide question as regards other parts of New Zealand it could not bo easily undertaken. Mr. G. AY. Rogers, clerk to tho Egmont County Council, fokwarcled copy of resolution passed by his council deferring consideration of tho proposed electric tramway between New Plymouth and Opunake. BY-LAWS. Alessrs. Govett and Quilliam, council solicitors, forwarded two copies of bylaws prepared by them which they trusted would meet the requirements of the council. The Chairman said ho had read carefully through the suggested by-laws, and they appeared to him to he satisfactory. Full consideration of same was held over until the special meeting of the council to he held next week. LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL. Air. C. S. Rennoll forwarded copy of resolution as passed by tho Harbour Board at its mooting on Friday last with regard to representation at tho conference to be held in Wellington to consider the Local .Government Bill. It was decided to endorse the resolution. Mr. .T. B. Sim, provincial secretary of the Taranaki branch of the Farmers’ Union, forwarded copy of resolution passed by his executive with reference to the proposed representation at the conference. Copy of circular letter was received from Air. F. C. Bellringer, chairman of the Hospital Board, inviting the council to elect a representative to attend tho meeting to bo held at New Plymouth for the purpose of appointing delegates to attend tlie coufcrouce, at Wellington to discuss the Local Government Bill. The chairman was appointed. APPLICATION FOR SUBSIDY. Eight settlers residing and owning land adjoining the Te Kirihau Road, Oakura, requested the council to take the necessary steps to procure a subsidy of £' for £ in connection with the Te Kirihau Bridge loan of £6OO for the purpose of forming, grading, and metalling tho Te Kirihau Road. The council agreed to tho request. UPPER CARRINGTON ROAD CONTRACT. Alessrs. Sladden and Palmer reported that they had inspected the Upper Carrington Road contract and had to say that they did not fool justified in recommending tlie council to allow any more metalling to be done this season. It was decided to leave the matter in the- hands of Messrs. Sladden and Palmer to take whatever action they thought advisable. 1 PROPOSED MERGING. Air. W. B. Fnssoll, clerk to the AVaitara West Rond Board, wrote inviting tho chairman and Councillors Hill and Tate to attend tlio annual meeting of ratepayers and discuss the question of merging the road district into tho council. BRIDGE FOREMAN’S REPORT. Bridge Foreman Bond reported that tho Ngatoro Bridge had been completed and tho plant removed to Makatawa Bridge, the arch of which was finished, leaving tho retaining and parapet walls to complete. Ho had arranged to get shingle from the Mangoum' River for the Maugotoa Bridge. MISCELLANEOUS.

Mr. J. Wallace asked the council to have removed gorse and blackberry, which was growing on the Frankley Road opposite the property occupied by Mr. R. Todd.—Decided to draw tho attention of tho Noxious AVceds Inspector to tho matter. .

Miss Emily F. Mace was appointed typiste in the clerk’s office. Tho whole of the Hurworth Riding as at present constituted was placed under the charge of Foreman Eva. T. Soften was appointed surfaceman in the Okato Riding. There were seven applications for tho position Alessrs. Sole and Olliver will he requested to complete their contract on tho Carrington Road. Bridge 1 Foreman Bond will be asked to report on the condition of a concrete culvert near tho Oakura Dairy Factory.

It was resolved that the OkatoPuniho Dairy Company 'be requested to discontinue allowing water to overflow on the county road, otherwise the council would take action.

Foreman J. Holmes was granted bridge decking as requested. It was decided to request the Sash and Door Company to discontinue carting more than 1000 ft. of timber on a waggon over tho county roads during the winter months.

Foreman Seamark was granted 100 yds. of boulders for Allan’s Hill, and 150yds. for Hurford Road, and tenders will be called for same closing on the 15th inst.

It was decided to request a settler on tho Hurford Road to cut back overhanging trees.

Mr. F. W. M‘Grogor wrote asking the council to put the Koru Road in order. Foreman Brosnan will bo instructed to inspect the road and report at once what is required to be done. Mr., W. ,Ogier 3 .clerk-to tho .Moa Road

Board, wrote stating that his board would take over the roadway over the Waiongona Bridge on the Hurathowse Road when the metalling was completed. Thirty settlers in the Tarurutangi district drew tho council’s attention to the dangerous state of the Awai Bridge on the Hursthouse Road, part of which had already fallen into the river. It was causing the settlors great inconvenience and Toss.—Referred to the foreman for a report. Mr. H. Dempsey drew attention to tho condition of that part of the Old Hospital Road taken over by the council from tho Fitzroy Town Board, and asked that repairs be effected. —To be attended to.

Mr. Benoni AA’hite, Lower Mangorei, again wrote drawing attention to tho condition of tho cross roads at Mangorei. Pipes asked for by Foreman Bennett for the repair of culverts, etc., were granted. An application from Foreman Harvey for metal and timber was referred to the chairman to arrange. Councillor M'Allum's action in accepting the tender of Rowan and Thomason at £95 for carting 600 yards of metal in the Omata Riding was confirmed.

Air. P. AYood wrote drawing attention to several dangerous places along tho road in Oakura. —Referred to the foreman for a report. Messrs. Colson and Locke, of Fitzroy, waited on the council and asked for a supply of metal to metal the road giving access to their properties off the Smart Road. If tlie council would grant them' tho necessary metal, estimated at about 100 yards, they were willing to form the road and spread tho metal to tho satisfaction of the couuty foreman. —Granted.
