ENTERTAINMENTS.

EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE,

Saturday evening saw a full house at the Empire to witness the screening or the now selection of pictures. After viewing this programme thoro remains little doubt that the film-makers are moving with the times and keeping well up to the public taste. Amongst the best items arc two Vitagraph dramas, “Saving the Special,” a thrilling railway story, and “The Freshet,” a powerful dramatic picture, in which the leading actors and actress take no small risk in the flood scene. A Western romance, “The Peril of the Plains,” is full of interest and excitement. A most interesting film was that showing Burgess doing the famous Channel swim. The picture shows Burgess leaving the English soil, battling away in mid-channel, and finally staggering through the surf on the French sod, the last scene * causing a tremendous outburst from Saturday’s audience The comic and scenic films aro all high-class, and will bo Sn view again to-night. “ PHYLLIS.” This operetta will bo produced in Fitzroy Hall, for the benefit of the Fitzroy State School, on Wednesday evening.
