AUCKLAND SUBURBAN LAND.

AUCKLAND, May 6. Forty-six acres of the Orakei Estate, which the City Council proposes to acquire for suburban homes, were sold last month for £4500, and application has been made to the Maori Land Board for confirmation of the transaction. The Mayor states that steps will be taken to oppose the application on the grounds that it is not in the best interests of the Natives. It is believed that other sales have been completed, but details are not ascertainable. CLAIMS OF MUSICIANS, WELLINGTON, May 6. An organisation banded under the general title of the Wellington Performing Musicians’ Industrial Union of Workers, has cited a number of einS foyers of musicians as parties to a ispute to be heard by the Conciliation Council on May 15. Tho parties cited include various refreshment rooms, dancing assemblies and picture companies. Some of the demands are: Rehearsals, 9 a.m. to 6. os, after 6, 10s; rehearsals, public holidays, 13s; 4 weekly engagements, 6 nights, £4; casual performance, 21s: for permanent ■picture shows, vaudeville and circuses, £3 for six nights, with one matinee, with two rehearsals; continuous shows, £3 for (3 consecutive performances of three consecutive hours.

COUNCILLORS AND CONTRACTS.

DARGAVILLE. May 6. An extraordinary vacancy having occurred in tho Borough Council, F. Jones, proprietor of tho Times, was returned against two other candidates. Tho return was questioned owing to Mr. Jones’ printing and advertising contract with tho council. The manager of the Times has asked for a withdrawal of tho contract. Legal opinion was sought, which said that Mr. Jones was disqualified and also ineligible to stand again unless the council agreed to the cancellation of contract. Meanwhile Mr. Jones offered to insert borough advertisements free if_ the contract was cancelled. A majority of the council agreed to this, and Mr. Jones is now considered eligible to stand.
