(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Tiie community in general are delighted at the news (semi-official) that the Public Works Department have decided to construct a light tram from the railhead to the Tahora t tunnel, a distance oi nine miles, it is practically imperative that such a step should be taken, as the roads are already unnegotiable, and the twelve or fourteen five-horse waggons engaged in carting heavy materials for railway construction will have to give.it up. Wo have this week to say good-bye to bullock teams. From May 1 during the winter they are',not allowed on the roads, and by next year wo shall have the roar of the iron liorso with its many trucks and waggons. The framework is up, and the building will soon supply a long-felt want. The biggest majority of tho navvies engaged on the railway construction works did not show more than fifteen hours’ work for last week. Owing to rough weather, it took tho men all their time to keep their canvas homos from departing as nuguided sails. It is a poor look-out—fifteen hours a week and tho highest recognised pay ia Is per hour; it, won’t buy “baccy,” lot alone beerl yy,. have plenty visitors just now looking for game; some have returned homo with fair-sized bags. Constable Boulton, of Now Plymouth, is hero doing a little game-killing. Tho committee arranging a banquet in honour of Mr. Joseph M’Cluggage (tho defeated candidate at last election) toll us that on Friday, 10th instant, wo are going to have a real “ding-dong” political treat.
