INGLEWOOD.

(From Our Oku Correspondent.)

May 2.—Thu annual mooting of the BolOUgll Council Oil WfcuUesUuy lllgni >vtu» aiiu mu lusiaUuiiou meeting oi uiu iiia3’or (Mr. O. W. ileuneiL;, wno wan congratulated on all iiunus at his uuopposotl second election, winch sullioicnlly expresses the conlidenco winch tlio burgesses repose in lum, and also tho view they take ol Inn well-known progressive policy, us oxoinphliod in Uio piopusals recently bruugnu lorward lo bring tho town on to a moro up-io-dato looting.

in ms speech his Worship duly returned thunks for the congratulatory rpuiarks tenUered him by tne councillors, and expiessed great pleasure at the fact that trio ratepayers had seconded lua eltons, as shown by the result of the poll to purchase tho electric light works. Ho would have been pleased also to have seen the projxisal to erect a Town Hull carried, but us it was evident that there was a largo majority who wished tho. scheme well, he hoped to be able to bring a similar scheme again before them it it was legal to do At. The finances were not much diflereut at tho start of this new year trom what they were at the commencement of tho last one, and ho hoped that with careful control the termination of tho year would show that the same amoupt, or more, of excellent work had been accomplished. Business arising from correspondence was gone through, included in which was tlie receipt of two donations to tho baud rotunda fund from Messrs. Nixon and Nixon and Messrs, Pereival and Messenger. His Worship tho Mayor waa appointed a delegate to tho Local Government Bill conference at New Plymouth, and tho council then proceeded to elect the committees for tho current session, all tho previous councillors being again appointed.

Councillor Gibbs, on behalf of tho Domain Committee, stated that in future they would farm their reserves themselves on an arrangement with a reliable man, who was to be paid on a basis of 25 per cent, commission on profits, and no pay if there were no profits; he thought that they would find that tho noxious weed eradication question would bo solved in a practical manner, by this method. Ho also suggested that tho expert examination of tho Electric Light Company’s plant bo at once attended to, and this was referred to tho Finance Committee.

An ambitious metalling schedule was then brought forward by Councillor Young, as representing tho Works Committee, which if carried out will improve the streets included to an enormous extent.

Councillor Gibbs remarked, in approving same, that too much patching was done, which resulted in other weak places being made, and stated that the Finance Committee would do their best to assist the Works Committee in necessary works. The now famous band rotunda was then reported to be ready for opening, for which there would bo arrangements made later on.

A motion that the question of tho legality of again placing tho hall scheme before the ratepayers be referred to the Municipal Association’s solicitor for his opinion was brought forward by Councillor Tarpleo, and, being carried, concluded the business of an enthusiastic meeting.

Tho Fire Brigade has announced tho first of a series of fortnightly socials in the Druids’ Hall for Monday next, when it is to bo hoped that the young men will be present in larger numbers than has been the case for the last dances hold here, and give the girls a chance.

Those notes will bo in print too late to help announce the lecture pn the working of tho proposed Local Government Bill to be given to-morrow by Mr. H. Trimblo in tho Druids’ Hall. If ratepayers generally only know what farjoaching effects tin's Bill will have if it becomes law, they would ail inquire about it; as it is, they will probably sit tight and not trouble, and then won’t there be a fusel
