Mr. Martin Kennedy has been elected chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand.
Mr S Turner, who has recently done some'big climbs at Mount Cook, is at present on a business visit to iaranaki. Professor F. W. Haslam, who has occupied the chair of classics at Canterbury College for the past 32 years, is resigning on the giound or ili health. Sir Joseph Ward will pass through Christchurch on Tuesday morning on his way to the South and arrangements arc being made to bid him farewell at a representative public gathering on Tuesday morning. A New York cable reports the death of Miss Clara Barton, founder of the American Rod Cross Society, Loin chronic pneumonia, and of Major-Gen-\eral Fredrick Grant, son of the famous Civil War general, from heart failure. On the eve of his departure for Nelson Mr. W. J. T. Wiggs, Of the local Public Works Office, was to-day presented with a travelling bag by the combined office and field staff of the Taranaki Road District Mr. G. T. Murray, the engineer in charge, made the presentation, and Mr. Wiggs suitably replied. Mr. Wiggs will occupy the position of chief clerk in the Public Works Department, Nelson. During his five years' residence in New Plymouth, besides attending to ms official duties, he has identified himself with many local matters,_ more especially in regard to the Civil Service and to Freemasonry.
