INGLEWOOD

(From Our Own Correspondent.) April 10.—Now that the holidays are over, things will no doubt resume their normal running here and elsewhere, for it is undeniable that very unsettled feeling is always existent when we have working days sandwiched in between holidays. The bowlers here have had plenty of their favourite pastime and have kept their end up well against such doughty opponents as Fitzroy and Auckland. Several local cricketers jonnied to Hawera to enjoy a good game and of course the followers of the sport of kings made their way to Patou and Foilding although the weather was the reverse of tempting.

The public meeting of the ratepayers re the electric light scheme and the proposed Town Hall is called for Friday when no doubt there will he many and varied arguments brought forward, for and against. For the necessity of not only a public hall but an improvement on ’the present municipal offices th.ero can he little doubt, but whether the ratepaper, who is a cautious and shy bird will entertain the. proposal which may land him into paying a slightly increased rate, remains to be seen. Self sacrifice is not a virtue largely practised either here or elsewhere when it comes to dollars. One thing is quite certain, and that is, unless more information is supplied than has been dealt out up to the present, nothing will happen, as that appears to bo a point which a good many arc aeyrieved over. , , . The Stratford Scouts passed through this morning on the march to New Plymouth, which is a fairly large order for some of the juniors who do not look too old. 1 fancy there are a good many of our athletic youths, to say nothing of tho men, who would think not twice but hundreds of timet before starting on that tramp “just for fun. Tho Borough Council appointed Mr. M’Donald, who I understand, hails from Alanaia. to the post of workinji overseer, and Messrs. Thomas and Burrows to tho positions of surfacemen, at their last monthly meeting. There was keen competition, many applications having to be sorted out before a result could ho arrived at. The report of tho Baths Committee was the. reverse of euconraging, a very bad sen'cn having unset the financial aspect very greatly. Tenders for the ensuing year’s carting were also dealt with together with many other local details. Mr. Frcwin’s enterprise in showing last night in spite of the wretched weather was rewarded by a good house and the patrons were well repaid by enjoying one of the best, if not the best, programmes over shown hero. AVhere many films were so good it is hard to specialise but perhaps the “Drosses and Curls” film was the one which stood out most prominently. This was a perfect gem and well worth seeing. If programmes of this class continue to be shown Air. Frewin should continue to command an increased share of the public spport. The first dance of the season eventuates next Thursday when the Catholics open the hall in the Parish Hall with one of their popular socials.
