RADNOR HOAD. The Clminiuni reported; On Novcmher 27 I met. at Mtrall'ord. a deputation from the .-eltleih on Radnor Hoad, with ivleremv to their request that n sehool may he enahliahed on that road. It .seems to me that this is a ea.se in v. Ineli the children mi"ht to he conveyed to the Midhirst School, hut the simi allowed hy the Departrnent. which would amount in the whole, to Gs (>d per day, is quilt* inadequate when it is considered that some of the children would have to he taken rive miles, thus making ior the double journey in the morning and evening a twenty-mile drive. A lew of th" children at present go arrows the paddock* to fVnihroho. The nearest school is Denbigh, which could ho easily readied if the Derby Hoad were opened. Proposals for opening it have been made several times, hut so tar have failed, owing to want of unanimity among the settlers, and also because it iia.s not been found oossibhi to obtain n subsidy from the (iovornment. Nevertheless, those settlors whom I mot nviii confident that the road will eventually bo opened. A\ e dipoussod the question of the erection of footbridges across the HiaUau and To Popo streams, hut in the opinion of the deputation, oven if these bridges wero erected the road itself would be too wet for the small children) to go along, excepting in very dry weather, Under these circumstances, I recommended tlmt a temporary school ho opened in a largo room in Air. John Vickers’ house, which can bo obtained at a weekly rental of ss. This school would be closed if at any future time the Derby Road should bo opened. The Chairman said ho did not like making that recommendation, because lie considered that the children ought to be con roved to the school, but it -lid not seem likely that the Public Works Department would make the road. .Mr. Kenuedv thought they should apply to the board for a grant for the school. They had tried to got the road opened up. Mr, W. ILBnllnutync suggested they should make a further attempt to yet the Department to make a track’. He understood that a six-foot track, with swiny bridges and ditched on each side, could be made for an expenditure -at C7O. In his report he had put the, estimate at ClOn. fie suggested that if some members were in V l . eHingtoii they should interview the .'niiliorities. If this was done they would know in future how to act. Forming such tracks would obviate the necessity of having so many small schools. Children would yet bettor tuition in larger schools with more competent teachers, It was resolved that the report be, received and adopted, and that application ho made to the Department for a grant for the school.
