N.B. —Mr. Hogg and other Single Tax enthusiasts do not suggest the removal of the duties on the raw materials (wheat, oats, etc.). It is obvious they are “running with the hare and hunting with the hounds,” their object being to kill tho grain-growing and milling industries with their numerous adjuncts, such as Southern railways, etc., and, naturally, the shrinkage would have to bo met by increasing the Northern railages, etc. Their theory is ouo tax on tho land only and free trade. When this wan given birth to, the Asiatic problem was unhatehed. What encouragement would there be to go on tho land unices tho products of the soil are protected, on the same linos as our rivals? How would our town industries thrive under such stupidity? Could they compote against the sweated surplusages of thu world, unices amply protected? And even now it is with a struggle they exist.
