NATIONAL PROHIBITION.
(To tho Editor.) Sir.—lt docs not require a mathematician to tell how many votes were required on the “for” side to have carried national prohibition at the last election. Accepting the figurcs*242,543 ‘‘for” and 194,078 “against” it would have taken 19,426} more than was cast on the “for” side to have carried the measure. Of course, these votes would have to come from the “against” side, as there is no other place to obtain them. The total valid votes were '242; .543 plus 194,073, total 436,616. Throe-fifths of the total number of valid votes is 261,9695The number of votes cast for national prohibition was 242,543. plus number required to carry tho measure, 19,4263, equals 261,969-}. Mr. E. Whittle's figures are probably somewhere near correct for the next election; Ins figures are: 212,543 “ for,” plus 194,073 “against,” phis 48,566* “for’’; this equals 485,1821 valid votes.—l am, etc., IGNORAMUS.
