Dr. and Mrs. Wylie were passengers from Auckland by tho Rarawa last night. Nows reached town this morning of the death of Mr. George 'Turner, one of the oldest and most respected residents of Inglewood. A Masterton message- reports that Mr. Charles F. Gawitb, barrister and solicitor, who has been practising his profession in Masterton since 1875, and who was widely known and highly respected, died suddenly last night.
Miss Mary Terry, an ex-pupil of the New Plymouth High School, has just successfully passed her examination for the first year of the B.Sc. degree. She is now studying at Victoria College, and secured three firsts, one second, and one third.
Judge R. N. Jones has been appointed president of the Tairawhiti Maori Land Board in succession to Mr. Keefer, who recently resigned on account of what he regarded as departmental interference. The new president will continue to exercise his functions as a Native Land* Court Judge in the same district. The department view* is that it is rather an advantage than otherwise to have the two offices combined in one person.
