STRATFORD.
(From Our Resident Agent.) August 25.—The Stipendiary had quite a levee at the courthouse this morning, the Borough Inspector presenting a number of gentlemen. His Worship chatted pleasantly with each, generally on such subjects as cycling on footpaths, stray cows, or unattended horses. Sergeant M'Nelly helped to receive the visitors, touching upon various phases of the licensing question. One of the more notable of the guests was a lady of mature years, whose good nature had impelled her, despite her natural feminine reluctance to enter such u place, and the fact that she had been at her own request placed upon the dry list, to apply at a hotel bar for a bottle of beer for a friend (maybe on the dry list too). The Magistrate explained the legal difficulties attending indulgence in altruistic impulses of this nature, and the lady retired evidently pleased with her reception. 1 As much as lljd has been offered to local ‘factories for the first three months’ butter, with, as the sporting reporter would say, no takers. If there is a further rise, which is quite likely, we shall have the Trades and Labour Courtcil demanding that export be prohibited until the price comes down to say Bd, so as to provide cheap food for ‘‘workers,” ' The measles epidemic is gradually dying out for want of fresh subjects, and there are signs that another complaint is abating its first virulence. I mean the rinkomania fnriosa that has run concurrently with measles this winter.
