STRATFORD.
(From Our .Resident Agent.) August I].. —As a token of municipal sympathy with New Plymouth’s grief for a most worthy Mayor, the flag at the Borough Chambers is flying halfmast. It has been stated that Mr. G. Tisch was at one time a resident of Stratford, but 1 think not. His brother, Mr. William Tisch, now living in the Auckland province, was one of our pioneers. An unusually frosty winter has loft the grass paddocks very hare, but all farmers worthy of the name now rely on roots, hay, or ensilage for the first two months of the milking season. All the factories will be open next week, and Taranaki will be overrun by a horde of produce agents. Mr. Ellison, the London agent of our National Dairy Association, is to give an address here on the 18th.
A special . meeting of the Borough Council deckled, after a long discussion, that it was inadvisable at this stage to make public the report of the committee sot up to negotiate for the purchase of the Electrical Supply Company’s business.
The Maori footballers not only gave an excellent display of the game, but established a good name for themselves as true sportsmen on the field and as gentlemen in the town. The crowd, in spite of local patriotism, would have been just as pleased if the fortune of the game had not been with Taranaki. The school reopens, after the enforced holidays, on Monday. It is doubtful what sort of an attendance there will be. The by-streets of the town are still very quiet, from the absence of the usual sounds of child-life. The kiddies arc indoors attending to their measles.
