“JOHNNY VANE.” ■ The Biograph Pictures have secured for to-nighVs change of programme the star film, “The Life and Adventures of Johnny Vane,” the Australian bushranger. It gives a life-like resume of a well-known incident in the days of bushranging in Australia in the early sixties, and is naturally .full', of excitement. Amongst the notorious men in Australia during the early sixties- was one Johnny’ Vane, who, despite being led into the downward pall:. had some good characteristics that showed out in his later life. After a just sentence of fifteen years’ penal servitude, his good conduct gained him a release after six years’ imprisonment in Darlinghurst. The first Incident of his downward career was through a wager laid that ho would not bail up a Chinaman. Tho affair was more in the light of a practical joke than anything else, and Vane won' his wager. ■ Next morning Vane ivas astdhished to. read In the paper the startling heading, “Robbery Under Arms by Johnny Lane ” In company with his sweetheart Vane fled to the'bush. The nolice soon captured the .outlaw and tied him to a cart. Next morning the police were surprised to learri that Vane had escaped by the assistance of his sweetheart. Vane-now formed a gang of outlaws, and ■ with himself ns leader a series of determined and startling bushrangixtg acts were undertaken. Eventually tho gang was broken up, .and Vane surrendered himself to the authorities, and. his period of imprisonment with a chained gang commenced! Time passes, and 30 years fly by, and. the ex-bushranger, surrounded bv his family, becomes thoroughly reformed and lives in affluent . eircnnv stancos after arduous toil.
