TARAHUA.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—The now name of the Carrington Road Golf Club has furnished material for a good deal of speculation, and a pronouncement by your own philologist will be welcomed by a number of the Herald’s readers. The harp that once thro’ Tara’s halls, Tara-ra-boom-do-ay, and other Taras have been suggested as the raison d’etre of this symphonious appellation, but discussion has only resulted in confusion, and therefore this appeal to your superior knowledge. —I am, etc., TOORALOORAL.

[Mr. Percy Smith, a leading authority, tolls us the word moans "plentiful barbs,” and that the name was probably given by the Maoris to the loca ity by reason of the fact that they could obtain there plenty of material (heart of rimu) for making their spear, barbs. —Ed. T.H.]
