TARANAKI COMPANY. THE 'GOVERNMENT BONUS. In connection witth the amended concitions re tho Government bonus on crude petroleum tho Taranaki Peterhum Company is notifying the Goi eminent of its intention to put in a claim for tho first instalment of £2,500 i,i respect of 250,000 gallons of oil von from the Company’s bores at Moturaa. Nos. 2 and 3 wells arc both flowing sitisfactorily. Fair progress is being nado with the work at No. 1 and drilling operations are proceeding at No. 5. There were over fifty visitors at the bores on Wednesday, the “birthday” of the flowing well. Another batch of preference shares vas allotted at last night’s meeting of directors, making nearly 13,000 of these s.iares allotted to date.
Battcnherg Cake. —Make a Genoese paste as follows: —Take one pound of luttcr, one pound of castor sugar, twelve eggs, one pound two ounces of f our, two minces of cornflour, four ounces of ground almonds, and essence of vanilla. Beat up the butter and B igar, add the eggs, two at n time, beat well, add the ctsenco and mix the flour, t ic cornflour and almonds to a nice batter, then spread half of it on a large meat tin; with a sheet of white paper upon it, add a few drops of cochineal to t le other half, and beat up and lay it upon another papered tin and bake. YVhen done, strip paper off and leave it 11 get cold; then lay one piece upon tho other and cut in equal parts—square, oiling or diamond —then sandwich tw r o together and build up a nice cake, tour pieces of white and five pieces of pink. YVrap it in almond paste and ojeorate top with fondant icing. Tho Umpire Company’s “Elephant” Blond Tea at 2s 2<l per lb is just the most a ipropriate tea to accompany this cake. The “Elephant” Blend possesses all the s" rong characteristics of the finest Darj< cling teas, and the flavour is not too p-enounced, consequently the palate c innot tiro of it. This blend is a great fi.vourite, as is proved by the expanding sales. Procurable from most storck lepers in this district.
