Mt. L. Hansen is on a visit to New Plymouth.

Mr. and Mrs. H. Hino, of To Kuiti, aro on a visit to New Plymouth. , Mr. G. H. F. Rolleston, British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, was in town to-day. The estate of the late Hon. H. Scotland was proved at £14,533, and; that of tho late Taare Waitara at £16,518. Constable Hickman, of Opunake, after over forty years’ service in the Police Force, will retire shortly on pension.

Mr. and Mrs. S. Millington left Kew Plymouth this morning for Wanganui, where they propose spending a few daja before retu.’.iing to Wellington.

Mr. J. K. Logan, X. 5.0., Superintendent of Electric Lines, retired from the Public Service on December 31. after nearly 46 years’ work, i He joined in 1865 at Dunedin.

Before leaving Auckland, Mr. A. P. Dryden, who succeeds Mr, Chaney as chief postmaster here, was presented with an illuminated address by the members of the Auckland staff. ’Our Bahotu correspondent writes: Mrs. Vince is in a very critical state of health, having been taken suddenly ill bn Saturday, and all wish her a speedy recovery. Mrs. Vince is a recent arrival .in Bahotu, having formerly lesided at Drury.

Mr. Stuart Deacon, brother of Mr. OlaVo Deacon, of New Plymouth, has just been appointed Stipendiary Magistrate of Liverpool. from Itugbj lie went to Trinity College, Camondge, where he studied law, and having tauen honours in parts X and 2 of tue Law Tripos he graduated B.A and LL.B. iu 1890. Alter a year spent in a London office he was called to the Bar, on tiie nomination of Mr. Gully, K.C., now lord Selby, in; the Inner Temple in November, 1892. .In the following year he joined Northern Circuit, and some seven or eight years ago ho was elected chairman of the Commercial Law, Committee of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, a position he held for six years, i' For two years ho was vice-president of the Chamber, and last year was elected chairman of the council. He was for many years chairman of the Widnes Liberal-Club, and also of the Liverpool Beform Club, and has held several other important public positions. He is an. enthusiastic golfer, being captain this year of the Wallasey Golf Club. The Liverpool Post, which publishes a sketch of his career and his portrait, says that the city and all its interests are to bo congratulated on his appointment to the position of Stipcndiahy Magistrate, adding that he is a man of conspicuous ability, of powerful intellect, of deep moral feeling, and of serious humanity. .
