BLENHEIM, Jan. 2.

The Alarlborough lawn tennis tournament was successfully concluded to-day. In the semi-final of the ladies’ handicap singles Aliss Nunnelly (owe 15) vanquished Aliss Brewster (rec. 12) by 50 —45. Bert Griffiths (roc. 20) gained a very creditable win from Brown (owe 10), in the final of the men’s handicap singles, 80—74, In the final for the combined doubles championship, Miss Travers and Fisher prevailed against Miss Nunnelly and Brown, 6—l, 6—4, 6—l. In the final of the ladies’ handicap singles Miss Nunnelly (owe 15) won easily from Miss Thomson (roc. 18). AA'ith tho score at 39—35 Aliss Thomson cried content, and Aliss Nunnelly was acclaimed the winner. Air. Fisher, on behalf of the visitors, presented Air. G. Griffiths with a gold sovereign case as a memento and in appreciation of his kindness and generous assistance. Tho visitors express general delight with the teurnainent and flic hospitality of the Alarlborough people. NOTES. (From New Zealand Times.) MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. Although tho defection of Peacock and Fisher (tho latter retired in tho second round after Smythe made a fine recovery from 5—6 and love—4o to a lead at B—7. and 1 appeared likely to beat him) made this event loss interesting, still, the final was a very' good game, and Harold Brown, who has been m his best form throughout the Marlborough meeting, deserved the set ho won from Parker, Ho also led in one of the other sots, and there wore prospects of a five-set contest, but I’arkor got there hy his superior knowledge. Right throughout this match his game was characterised by greater accuracy than in any other match during tho week, and his famous drop shot was greatly in evidence. He was certainly playing a better game on Saturday, and a second meeting with Peacock would have been worth seeing. Peacock scratched for all events at the handicap meeting owing to Parker’s being allowed to compete. Parker was taken in as a late entry, and it is very regrettable that, seeing that Peacock beat him last week, the New Zealand champion should have seen fit to act in such an unsportsmanlike manner.—((A’olley.” LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. All the Now Plymouth ladies were knocked out in straight out sets in the singles. Aliss Brewster ran Miss Bathnn to 6—4 in her second set; Aliss AI. Thomson was beaten 6—l, 6—-1; Aliss V. Simpson was more successful in her match with Miss Butterworth, being able to take one ot the three sets at t—6; while Miss L. Thomson tailed to secure one from Aliss E. Travers. rr ■—y** iwr— MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. The “Griffiths Bros.” whoso names appeared on Saturday were, after all, the New Plymouth pair. As Parker and Brown, Peacock and Didshury, and Fisher and Smytlio wore all on the same side of tho draw, tho

final of tho doubles was a very iame affair, Parker and Brown contesting it with tho two Griffiths. They certainly perfor med very well to secure six games (6—4, 6—2) against Parker and Brown, hut tiio'-o was not the slightest possibility of a decent contest resulting from the meeting. Peacock and Didshury, however, gave the winners something to think aoout in tho first match, and they played so well that it was a great pity tho former and Fisher split up with the object of making a more even contest of it. but they did not know then that Parker was playing. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. ANOTHER REVERSAL OF FORM. Tho final of the ladies’ doubles produced another extraordinary result, inasmuch as Misses Nunnelly and Baird completely turned the tables on tbo pair who defeated them in the final of the New Zealand championship. The result was foreshadowed by tho difficulty perienced by Misses Travers and M ollwood in defeating tho two Thonulon girls (Misses Batham and Simpson) on the preceding day, 3—6, 12 —10, 6-yO, the latter on more than one occasion having the match within their grasp. The result was scarcely anticipated at all—much less by 12 games to 3, though the greatly improved form of Miss Baird was largely the contributing factor to the severity of the defeat, as in their meeting in the New Zealand doubles this player was easily the weakest of the four. MEN’S HANDICAP SINGLES. FIRST GRADE. E Griffiths was beaten in the first round. Bert Griffiths won by default in the second round, and just won the third by 70—68, after giving H. N. Maddox 18 points. In the semi-final the score was again 70 —68 in Griffiths’ favour. This time he had to concede I. Brock 10 points. In commenting on this semi-final yesterday’s Times said: “Brown has had such comfortable \yins in all .his matches that ho looks to be nicely enough handicapped to win the event. Griffiths, on the other hand, has had close finishes in every match. He plays a fair game, though, and Brown may find 30 in St) too big a hurdle but the writer likes his chance. Apparently the Times writer underestimated the New Plymouth player s ability, as/thc final scores show. • LADIES’ HANDICAP SINGLES. Aliss V. Simpson (15) secured victory over Miss Batham (scr) by 4 points in the first round, while) giving Miss Lord 20 points in the second, again won by the *jme margin. In the third roand she was easily beaten by Aliss Newton (35) who beat Miss, AI. Thomson in -he second round. Miss Brewster safely got through to tho semi-final, when Aliss Nunnelly beat her by 6 points. Miss L. Thomson drew a bye in tho first found. She won the second and third easily, and, giying_ Miss JVowton 17 ]>oinis, won the semi-fiiial S(L—4B. Apparently her successive victories proved too mneh for her in the final ns, as son as Miss Nunnelly caught up her handicap, Miss Thomson withdrew in her favour. She therefore was runnerup. LADIES’ HANDICAP DOUBLES. Altsses Brewster and V. Simpson partnered in this event, and were just, beaten by the two points in the first round. Misses L. and At. Thomson (15) gained a victory over Misses Nunnelly and Baird (owe 20)'by 4 points. The Misses Thomson also won by 4 in tho semi-final, but were beaten in the final by 6. The Times writer says that Misses Batham and Simpson ha'd a very comfortable journey throughout this event, and evidently had lenient treatment from the Imndicappers, as they are both fine double players, and would still have had a winning chance an additional 5 points behind the mark. COAIBINED HANDICAP DOUBLES. Aliss L. Thomson hero played with Dr. Bennett and was played out in the first round, her sister sharing with her tho same fate. E. Griffiths and Aliss Brewster easily won their first match, but got no further. Bert Griffiths, playing with Miss V. Simpson, had a groat run of victories right through to the semi-final, winning this, 62—60. Two matches are left to bo played to complete this event, the pairs left in being F. P. AVilson and Aliss Batham, E. AA'. Griffiths and Aliss A T . Simpson. These appear, to have not been played, as the result has not been telegraphed.
