NEW YEAR’S DAY.
■ SEASIDE PICNIC AT NEW PLYMOUTH BREAKAVATER. Although the fates wore again unkind as regards the weather, the Seaside Picnic for New Year’s Day, 1911, was probably the best yet organised by the Mayor, Mr. G. Tisch, and his small but willing body of workers on the Seaside Improvement Committee.. Monday. morning broke overcast' and the northerly wind got up a choppy sea which did not encourage pleasure seekers to make an early start for the beach. It was soon seen that the marine, excursions on the Rarawa arranged for the afternoon would have to be abandoned. The nuraerons ploasurc-seekors however passed the day inspecting tho new dredge, harbour works, climbing Paritutu, etc. By eleven o’clock the weather improved and large numbers began to arrive. Two large trains brought in crowds from the country, and tho numerous busses, etc., .did good business from the town. Many settlers and others from all parts of the district drove in their own traps as could, bo seen from the largo and miscellaneous collection of vehicles in the Harbour Board’s yards. in all there must have been nearly 5000 on the beaches and sandhills. An early start was made with, the tea and hqt water arrangements, and from eleven o’clock there was a constant stream of people requiring supplies. About 1500 gallons of hot water -were distributed , during the day. The railway officials handled a big passenger freight without a flitch, whilst the police controlled the vehicular traffic. During the afternoon a number of children’s races wore got off. A novelty was Father Xmas who was escorted on to tho beach under - the protection of the police. He was heavily freighted with toys, bags of lollies: etc. A prize was given for the first girl to catch him. At a signal ho was freed, and pursued by hundreds of girls, lie sot off at, a hot pace up tho beach. He soon tired, and was eventually captured and at once stripped of all his valuables by his noisy pursuers. During the day, the Garrison Band played a good selection of music. Mrs. Tisch kindly entertained the 'Band at afternoon tea, when Bandmaster Cummins took the opportunity of wishing the Mayor and Mrs. Tisch a Happy New Year. He said that the interests. and progress of New Plymouth meant progress for the Band, and that all Mr. Tisch had done to assist the town and its seaside attractions meant increased success for the Band. He had to thank the Mayor also for a great deal l of direct assistance. Shortly before five o’clock Air. W. Ambufy in a few words, on. behalf of the town and country) people, thanked the Mayor for a particularly enjoyable day’s outing. Cheers were then called, for the Mayor and Mrs.Tiseh, the Band striking up “For they are jolly good follows.” Air. Tisch replied thanking one arid all for making the day the success it was, and wishing all a Prosperous Now Year. A start was then made for home by an orderly but happy crowd. Credit ‘is undoubtedly duo to Air. Tisch and the hon. secretary, Air. A. L. Humphries, for very, excellent arrangements throughout the I day.
