In the balloon race which started at St. Louis, for the Gordon Bennett trophy, Colonel Shacck, aboard the Helvetia, landed at Vaillamaria, Quebec, after covering 1100 miles. Three other balloons crossed over to Canada. The Hamburg HI. fell into a lake from a height of 6000 feet. , Lieut. Vogt and Herr Asman swam to an island and remained there all night. Asman sustained a broken arm. Two Indians, believing the moon had fallen from the sky, came in boats and after some difficulty they were induced to rescue the two aeronauts. The balloon was saved, Vogt towing it and swimming to the island. THREE BALLOONS MISSING. (Received Oct. 22, 12.50 p.ra.) NEW YORK, Oct. 21. The St. Louis authorities are alarmed at' not hearing from three of the balloons in the race, and the Canadian Government has been asked to search for them.
