SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
MR. W. HUMPHRIES INJURED. An accident of a, rather serious nature occurred in Devon Street, near the Criterion Hotel, about 10 o’clock this morning. Messrs. William Humphries and A. E. Watkins were crossing the street when a cart belonging to the Westport Coal Company, and driven by J. O’Brien, bore down on them. The driver whistled a warning, and _ Mr. Watkins sprang clear of the vehicle. Mr. Humphries attempted to do so, but just at that moment the horse shied at a waggon loaded with moat, and knocked Mr. Humphries down. A wheel of the cart —which was a heavy one, but unloaded—passed over Mr. Humphries’ right shoulder. It is also stated that the horse trod on him as he lay on the ground. Mr. Humphries was immediately carried into Messrs. Teed and Co.’s pharmacy, and medical assistance sent for. A few minutes later, however, Dr. Lcatham made his daily call at "the pharmacy, and he attended to the sufferer. Dr- Fookes also appeared on the scene a little later. After temporary relief had been afforded to Mr. Humphries, he was sent to the district hospital in the Ashford litter. .At the hospital he was attended to bv Drs. Walker and Leatham. It was found that a number of ribs on the left side wore broken, the right collar-bone was dislocated, and there were several bruises. Mr. Humphries is also suffering somewhat severely from shock, associated doubtless with internal injuries.
