MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE.
MAN MISSING PROM RARAWA. r The mysterious • disappearance of a steerage passenger named ■ ■ Joseph Thompson occurred during the voyage of tho steamer Barawa from Onehunga to New Plymouth last night. ' ! The forecabiri steward of the Ilarawa reported to the police this morning that he last saw the missing inan about midnight hi bed, but on getting up ho found the man missing. He searched the boat but could not find him,- Ho also searched the passenger’s bunk, finding under the pillow a leather purse containing five shillings in silver, a bank-book on the Bank of New Zealand at Hamilton. : There were articles of apparel and a bottle containing whisky. , (jhatting with a Herald reporter this morning Captain Norbury referred tq tho man’s disappearance as very mysterious. The passage was a very calm one and it was impossible, for the.man to have been washed overboard. As far as ho knew the man was perfectly sober. It remains a mystery whether the man was lost overboard or left tho ship on its arrival here.
Thompson is described as a man of about 45 or 60 years of age. Ho is about six feet in height, is of medium build and has fair hair and a fair complexion. No further particulars regarding tho missing man are available at present.
