OBITUARY.

HON. H. SCOTLAND, M.L.Q Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 27. The Hon. Mr. H. Scotland, M.L.C,, died at Wellington this afternoon'. The late. Mr. Scotland was a native of London,' having been born at Muswell Hill on July 11,,1821. He was the youngest son or Mr. George Scotland, C. 8., Chief Justice of Trinidad. He was educated at the Merchant . Tailors’ School and St. John’s College, Oxford, and afterwards studied for the bar, h) which he was called in 1849. In thff following year he came to New Zen land and settled ;in Taranaki. Fof many years he lived close to New Plymouth on the Old Hospital Road, at the residence known as Sootlands, now occupied by Mr. Joseph-Mackay. In 1868 he was called to the - Legislative Council, of which ho was at the time of his death one of -the very few life members, and also one of the most regular attendants. A good many years ago he left this district and wen! to reside at liaipara.
