The Right Hon. J. W. Lorytbor lias been re-elected speaker of the British Mouse of Commons.—Cable. Inspector Wilson, officer in charge of tho AVanganui-Taranaki police district, is on a visit to New Plymouth. A cabled from London reports the death of Mr. Pete Curran, an ex-Labour member of the British House of Commons. 1
Dr. E. A. AValkcr will leave for the Dawson’s Falls Mountain House tomorrow morning to spend a fortnight’s holiday. Mr. T. J. Brassey has resigned the management of the; New Zealand Insurance Company’s London branch, and Mr. C. F. Minnitt, the inspector of the company, is now acting in his stead.
A Press message from Foikling reports the death of Mr. A. C. Morton, a local 'land agent, who was a war ’correspondent with the New Zealand contingent in the South African War. Mr. W. F. Massey, M.P., leader of the Opposition, has accepted an invitation from the residents, of Hokitika to deliver a political address there prior to the commencement of next session.
It is reported that Mr. E. G. Honey formerly of Palmerston, and latterly of the Melbourne Argus, is at persent engaged on the staff of the London Daily Mail.
Miss Maud Beatty, a former popular member of Pollard’s Opera Company, is now in America. She was married recently to Captain Dawson, an American, and they have been running a touring company of their own.
A press wire from Wanganui records the death of Mr. Harry Bullock, manager for Messrs. A. Hatrick and Co. Deceased was 36 years of ago, and was w.ell known and esteemed in business circles on this coast.
Mr. George P. Brown, for n number of years a successful journalist in 'Wellington, and during the last few years a senior member of tho reporting staff of the Evening Post has been offered and has accepted the position of editor and manager of tho Horowhouua Chronicle, Levin.
Dr. Wilbur Chapman, the well-known American evangelist, has definitely promised to hold a mission in New Zealand, pays an exchange. Dr. Chapman recently visited Australia, but was unable to come to Now Zealand on that occasion.
Mr. G. N. Baoyortz has boon offered by tho committee of tho Grand National Eisteddfod of Australasia tho position of adjudicator in tho elocutionary, vocal, and choral selections at this year’s festival at Ballarat. This may bo regarded as a compliment of tho highest order to Mr. Baoyortz, who adjudicated in tho elocutionary classes at. last year’s competitions (remarks tho Otago Times). Mr. Baoyertz has also been asked to assist the committee in the selection of suitable subjects for both tho elocutionary and literary sections. .
