THE AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.

SECOND DjlY'S GATHERING.

CUP .WON BY S. JOHNSON.

Over seventeen hundred people paid for admission to the New Zealand Axemen's Association annual championship carnival at Eltham yesterday. This is a record attendance for the second day. For the two days the outer gates, exclusive of the stands, yielded £241 — a record for the carnival.

A strong wind somewhat checked the enjoyment of the public, at yesterday's gathering, but, on the other band, this wind, carried off the **«*& that threatened. The raana.gom«nt was again good, th© only defects being those mentioned, in yesterday's Herald. Further experience of the timber used on this occasion, however, did not confirm the estimates of it previously formed. Mixed birch blocks we*© used, and the red birch geueraliy was .too, hard, and had more kuots and other imperfections than the grey h|rch. The grey birch was less hard and was more even quality, but sufficient blocks of it could npt be procured* It is always a very difficult matter to get blocks ,up to requirements in both Quality and quantity for such a big carnival. The principal evenfc of the day was the axemen's cup handicap, in which prize-money to the amount of £137 is allotted, in addition to the cup. This was won by Sam Johnson, of Giaborne, an .axeman who has greatly improved in tho past couple of years. He is an axeman with a fine st^le, and cuts a beautiful and "even scarf, judging his chopping very well. As a rule tie ' chops steadily at first, and cbmes with a great r,ush at the finish. In addition to winning the cup; Johnson won tho underhand handicap chop, the first-class underhand handicap, was second in the Ne*w, Zealand 12-inch championship chop,' tbird in the world's championship chop, and fourth in the visitors' chop. Altogether he won £165 10s in p^ee^mbney. Qn both days the jstham Brass Band rendered enjoyable programmes of music. Results : — CHOPPING AND SAWING EVENTS. AXEMEN'S CUP HANDICAP, 18in. f blocks.
