'Ihe date and place tor the name is to be arrange 1 « hen the presentation of the champion shield and the champion crib and euchre shields will be presented to the winning clubs. The first shield was won by the Fire Brigade and the two other shields by the Waireka team, which was runner-up for the aggregate championship. The individual crib championship was won by the captain (H. N. Goldwater) of the Waireka team, who takes Mr. R. J. Deare's special prize. It was also decided to hold the annual meeting of the association in March, 1910. The following table shows the positions of the different card clubs competing for the New Plymouth Card Association Shield : —

The eighth of the series of 6ocials in aid of the funds of the Central School was held in the gymnasium building last night and notwithstanding the cold weather there was a very good attendance. After a keen contest the prizes were won as follows: Ladies', Mrs. Jas. Harvey 1, with 15 games, Mrs. A. Hardgrave 2, with 13 games; men's, Mr. L. Wells 1, with 16 games, Mr. W. Weber 2, with 15 games. At the conclusion of the tournament it was decided to hold a long night on Wednesday, October 6 in the Brougham Street Hall. Two hours will be devoted to cards and the gathering will conclude with a dance. Taken as a whole the profits have not been very large from the socials, but it is hoped there will be a good credit for the benefit of the school funds as a result of these long nights.
