On his. way to Wellington, Taingakawa states, he will visit all the chief settlements that they might bear witli him the voices of an overwhelming majority of tho Maori race. Already upwards of S»,000 have deliberately signed their names to a petition to King Edward asking the Crown of England to take the matter up. Taiugakawa says he will do his utmost to or root n settlement with the Government, but in the event of failure is determined to go to England and lay the case beiore the Throne. He claims that the Treaty ot Waitangi was for tho protection of the Maori races.
