WHANCAMOMONA.

I' 111 1 «>m Our Own Correspondent.) r l ln« ro;ids> are still in a very bad way hetuct'ii Kcporua and Whsngamomons. It is just jwssible all goods will have to be patkt'd for a week or so, especially when the mud is drying up. There is nu »i^n ol any road work going on in hi'i-e. It is time our member, Mr. Hine, moved in the matter. It looks very much like hanging up the road formation through the TangaranaU (Jorge, thus delaying the often promised connection with the Ohura County,. The Stratford County Council has fallen 111 with the Whang* County's su^cbtion in appointing a commissionis to a^ess the amount (if any) to be paid by the hitter county towards the upkeep of the Main Ohura Road through the East Riding. This is, I am sure, a very wise step. If it had been left to a conference of the two counties there would have been no finality. In iu.y opinion we should not be culled upon 'at this stage to contribute towards the upkeep of this road through the Ea*,t Riding, as aU our rates were spent in that particular ten miles of road for years. When tb* a'counts were adjusted in the formation of our county, the Stratford County was treated handsomely thus, and if we had not been fortunate in having Mr. M'Cutchan as chairman of tho now county, Whanga would have_ fared worse by far. In any case we will not use that portion of the Ohura R««d after this year as the railway will be oiiened to Huiakama. If the Whangs County Council has to pay any sum to Stratford County for through traffic in tho East Riding then surely the Stratford Borough Council is morally and legally bound to contribute a fair proportion towards the upkeep, as Stratford merchants and business men take orders in Strathmore, Pohokura and Whangamomona with a guarantee to deliver goods at per ton, thus taking the risk of delivery into Whangamomona. Indirectly Stratford is. practically doing half its business in the settlements down the Ohura Road, so the Stratford Borough Council should be compelled to pay something towards. maintaining the road when a large proportion of their business people are prospering by the trade they do down hero. , The bachelors' ball comes off on the 24th inst. and promises to be the event of the year. I hear Mr. Harry Blair, the energetic secretary, has sent out 500 invitations. The settlers at Tahunawa are moving in the direction of getting a weekly mail service from Whanga. They should also get the telephone extended as there are several families down that way. Messrs. M'Cluggage Bros. are thinking of getting a motor waggon this summer, one similar to those that are to be run round the mountain. By doing co it will be possible^ with Harry Blair oh the box, to do a trip per day from Whangs to Douglas and back. The same firm, for the first time, has'had tb go- out of tn* district for fat cattle. This i» chiefly on aoopunf of the extra trade on the raflwajr works. Its fat stook is coming front the Waimate plains. Tenders, close on Wednesdayfor S burnt papa oontract on tne Whangs Road.. - -. There is a lot of building going on this' summer:, and we are all waiting for Mr.. J. fßobson. to start his saw mill at Pohokura. .Whang*-won tho football natch epnjly on Saturday. There' was a serious disturbance, here in the evening ftt the social, when sotrfe rnffians threw bottles and seriously injured two respectable visitors, more of which will probably be heard in w> Magistrate's Court at Stratford,. We tire badly in Want of one or two policemen here, one for day, duty and the oth«-r for night duty.' Either tnat or 1 enncel the license for the Whanga Hotel. The change could not be mutSh' wow©.' \l any.
