EGMONT VILLAGE

(From Our Own Correspondent.) We are well known as being up-to-date in most ways of amusement because we have to amuse ourselves. Travelling shows do-not patronise us very often, and when they do as a rule they are second or third rate: Last<Fridey evening we ha 4 a "Kitchen Evening in- the hall. The custom. 'now is for people about to .be married to' have various, evenings at which their friends are invited: Last week's affair must have been a huge sucdess. The hall was crowded ; people from Hillsborough and Inglewood- availed themselves of the invitation, and of course brought their kitchen utensils with them as presents for the bride tUfty is to be. The invitation did. npt say what article was to bo procured, the result being rather funny. Unless the happy couple are taking a boarding house Qr laundry, 1 fail to see what will become of some qf the presents. It seems rather hard on the old folk who have furnished their homes themselves. This may be one, way of inducing young people to iriarry, but they should remember to state quite clearly on tho invitation card the article required. I wondep where these "evenings" are likely to stop. I know several who are thinking of having a draw ing-room evening, others a dining100m evening, others a bed-room evening, and so on. 1 might suggest a fj.rm-yard evening. However, the idea Una caught on, and I expect to see them «« popular a» euchro parties. Tho Matual Improvement Society's meeting last week was well attended, thp programme being "Impromptu Speeches?' Two snbjects were dealt with -"Should Trial by Jury lw Abolished?" and the question of "Farmers' Meat Freezing Works at Moturoa." Both subjects were very well debated.
