WAIPARA STRIKES A ROCK.
PASSENGERS AND CREW SAFE.
BRISBANE, August 26. The steamer Waipara, bound to London via Sydney, struck a rock near Cape More ton at midnight, and was -beached. The crew and passengers were landed safely. The bottom ot the vessel is evidently badly damaged, lor three of the holds are hill ot water. The weather is bad. A south-eabt gale and heavy rain was raging when tbe Waipara struck. Rockets were fired and the pilot boat immediately came to the vessel's assistance. Water commenced pouring in the second and fourth holds, necessitating .beaching to prevent sinking. The steamers Palmer and Maranop were dispatched to lighter the cargo of the Waipara, which' includes 4000 b*]e» of wool, 700 tons of tallow, 1200 tons of frozen meat, and 250 tons «f copper.
