WRECKAGE OR WHALE ?

Captain Holm, ion./ of the barque Helen Denny, which arrived at Wellington from Newcastle a few days ago, reports that bis vessel passed a strange looking object in Cook Strait last Bunday morning, which might have been a dead whale, bat seemed more likewreckage. At 3 a.m. the helmsman saw a dark object about 60ft. in length projecting about 6ft. above the water. 'The barque passed within 30ft. of the mass, but as it was very dark the helmsman was unable to distinguish any special features of the obstacle. The Helen Denny was off White Bluff, Cloudy Bay, when the incident occurred.
