'Per Press Association. WJEbLDfGTON, August 20. The GOtiO spectators who in fine weather watched the North blaifd.meet the South Island to-day had a rattling good' gated for their money. AD , through it was fast and open, marked by many pieces of stirring, first-class play, aitfk.the scoring was lively. The Southerners played with a combination that was entirely missing in their opponents* play till the second half of the ,game, and piled up 11 to 3 in the first apell, though playing against the wind. In the second half the Northerners showed a better front, bnt they could .never make up the leeway, and all, , through South always bad a little more in hand. Each side added eight $owim, •ad the final score was : South 19, North 11, which is not more of a margin than the victors deserved. South had the 1 advantages of having five backs from the same district in their rear division. They played like clockwork together, ■*^ it was quite refreshing to watch iihsir sharp clean passing, and the fine lum of foot possessed by some of them. A feature of the game was the splendid place kicking by Patoii of Otago, Weston, of Christchurch, and O'Leary of Auckland,' who succeeded in Inckipg goals from most awkward angles, both with and against €be wind.
