GOVERNMENT ADOPTS THE YOUNG MAORI PARTY.

In this stress of the situation the Government, in the person of the Native Minister, came to the rescue. Indeed, Government employment, as n bright light in the dark attracts moths, became the attraction and incentive to all these young lads educated junder this sectarian system of Government education, whicli also, unt'l quite recently, made no attempt to train the young Maori to utilise the land of his inheritance or to enable him to earn I'is oww living as a craftsman. Eighteen yaars after the advent of the nead master (in 1896> To Ante College Students' Association was formed; which is now known as the Young Maori Party, the objects of which were in every way commendable!

It will thus be understood that tho so-called Young Maori Party is purely and simply a . proselytising emanation t»f the Anglican Church, having its inspiration from Te Ante Anglican Church 'Maori College, .and it represents but^a small but prominent sec tion of the Young Maori people. This prominence is partly due to the distinguished ability of a few of the leading young men or the party, but greatly due to the support and encouragement the Government has given them. ' By far the gre&ter proportion of th** Maori people are outside the 'pale of the Anglicin I ' Church, many' are Wesleyans 1 rfrid Roman Catholics, a very few *r*. Presbyterians (the Presbyterian Church has hot been very active in mission Work among the Maoris'), many> are yet ouUide the pale of every church, Mnd art increasing, number a:V teing shepherded by the Mormons So much, then, (of the origin of the Young Maori Perty, the leaders ot which have, repeatedly stated on publixiilatforms their desire to lead their Fellow-countrymen ajiong .the path of progress in civilisation, hand in hand with their Pakeha friends.

Let us consider how they are doing this.
