THE OTRANTO'S TRIALS.
The Otranto.' the first of two steamers built by Messrs. Workman, Clark, and Co., of Belfast, for £h« Orient Company's mail- service between London and Australia, was last month taken on her second trials. The Sydney Morning Herald states that the vessel, v.hich has a grots register ot 12,500 , tons, has accommodation for 300 first class, 143 second clasfc and 400 third c]ass passengers, a» well as for 450 emigrants. The first class dining saloon, a noble apartment on the upper deck has its tables arranged on the restaurant system. ' In respect of internal appointment* and general furnishing, the liner is very similar to her two magnificent predecessors— the Orsova and the Otwav, wbjch «have already paid their, maiden visit* to Australia. They are regarded as among the most palatial and luxuriously fitted vessels afloat, and represent the highest dc ! >tlopnient of twentieth century marine -iirchitecture. . The ventilation tof a!! parts of the vowel, has been carcftill; considered with a view of wcuring Uk comfort of passengers whilst the vesse! ' is passing through tropical w aters. The propelling machinery., consists of two independent se^ts , of quadruple expav bion engines. Or the trial run the vessel behaved m an eminently satin fMctory manner, " attaining a meat: speed of 18.95 knots.
