A LINER AND THE CUSTOMS.

As the result of the leisure of certain uncustomed goods by the customs offi-, dais on the Tongariro on Saturday, Charles Maurer, barber dn the Teasel appeared in the Magistrate's Court this afternoon, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., charged with harbouring uncustomed goods to the value of £71. The articles consisted of eleven overcoats, "**y-fcv»ostrich feathers, and Urn dress pieces. 'The Tongariro haiT been -previously searched by the CnkqttU, wheat, on the occasion of her arrival from Loodon, some of the engines** vefe-brought before the Magistrate and fined. Snice then the liner has been loading along the coast, and her last port was Wa£ tara. ( Mr. Fitsgibbon, for accused, in applying for a remand, intimated thai defendant's vessel sailed for on Thursday next. Defendant hadagood defence and did not wish to lose his position on the ship. Mr. C. 8. Nixta* Collector of Customs, raised no objection tq the request, and defendant was accordingly remanded to reappear p* Wednesday. He was admitted to bail in one. surety of £50. It is understood that a warrant has been taken out for the arrest of William John Pine, storekeeper on the_ Tongariro, on a f>nftrg*» also of having harboured uncustomed goods.
