CONTRARY TO RULE.
THE MINIS I'KK AND AN ENGINE DRIVER. Per Press Association. \\ KLLINGTON. July 2G. Asked by a New Zealand Times ropiesentative why he had exercised his veto in the l.ulway appeal cases, the Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister of Railways, said : "It is the biggest certainty on earth that we cannot hand the sole control over to the Appeal Boards. The veto has been exercised iv the public interest." Referring to the decision of the North Island Appeal Board, which was vetoed, with the consequent resignation of Mr. W. A. Witch, president of the A.S.H.S., from the board, Mr. Millar said appellant, a driver, was dismissed for deliberately fouling the main line, contrary to rule and jeopardising the lives of passengers in the mad tram. The board recommended he should be reinstated as a fireman. In due course he would have claimed piomotion as a driver again. He (the Minister) w:is not going to take the lesponsibility and jeopaiilise life in that wpy.
