HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE.
Per Press Asociation. WELLINGTON, July 26. The High Commissioner's cable, dated July 24, states: Alutton.— The market remains very depressed, and prices are not likely to advance at present. C^ertury is quoted at 2|d, North Island 2id. The lamb market is very weak. An attempt was made to make the marlsct firm by advaucing prices, but it proved unsuccessful, as the agreement has not been rigidly observed. It is considered useless to "make further attempts, especially as the supply exceeds the demand. Canterbury is quoted at 3id, North Island 3Jd. Beef.— The market is weaker, and has a downward tendency. The supplies vi A inoi ican chilled beef are large. Butter.— The market is steady, and prices aw well maintained. Little is doing, but a good -feeling prevails. Nominal choicest New Zealand butter is quoU-d at 108s per cwt, Danish 113s, Siberian KKId. Cheese.— The market is firm , with more inquiry for New Zealand at 625. Canadian is' quoted at 58s. Hemp. — The market is firm owing to the reduced supplies. New Zealand offerings are very small. New Zealand good fair grade on spot is quoted at £24 per ton, New Zealand fair grade £23 (forward shipments at same price), fair current Manila on spot £24 per ton, forward shipments £23 15s. It is reported that the Americans are again buying more freely. The Manila output is "27,000 bales. The cocksfoot seed market is very dull, and 1 cannot quote.
